History does not disappear simply because time has passed—especially when only a few decades have gone by. In the Gengzi Year of 1900, a tragedy unfolded along the left bank of the Heilongjiang River in northeastern China. It shocked the world at the time, yet has gradually faded from public memory. In its determination to seize Chinese territory, the Tsarist Russian government deliberately carried out massacres along the left bank of the river. Countless innocent Chinese civilians lost their lives, their homes, and everything they possessed. In 1957, Qing'er, a second-year history student at Peking University, was branded a Rightist for researching this forgotten chapter of history and was sent back to her homeland for "reform through labor." Together with her fellow student, Lu Zhenggang, who shared her passion for history, she endured political persecution without surrendering either her convictions or her original aspiration to uncover the truth. Even after losing almost everything, they pressed on under immense pressure, venturing deep into the remote forests to seek out one surviving witness after another. Before the last eyewitnesses disappeared forever, they hoped to preserve a historical truth that was on the verge of being lost. It was precisely because of this choice that their tragic fate was, in many ways, sealed from the very beginning. The Left Bank of the Heilongjiang River is a historical novella by Yeshan Luming, inspired by real historical events. Through the intertwined themes of love, ideals, faith, suffering, and historical memory, it follows the destinies of two young people as they struggle to choose between silence and truth in the face of history and fate.
