送飯的怠慢她; 婆子們譏笑她; 丫鬟們冷落她;
有的人,是被規矩逼死的; 有的人,是被名聲逼死的; 有的人,是被嫉妒逼死的;
(未完待續)Looking back years later, Jia Baoyu came to realize that among all the girls of the Grand View Garden, the one who lived the most confused life—and perhaps the most pitiful one—was not Lin Daiyu, but You Erjie.
At least Lin Daiyu understood her own suffering. She knew how cold the world could be and how frightening human hearts could become. That was why she so often grieved over the changing seasons and wept in silence. You Erjie was different. Until the very end of her life, she seemed never to have fully understood how she had been driven, step by step, onto a road from which there was no return.
You Erjie was not originally a member of the Jia family.
She and her younger sister, Yousanjie, were the stepsisters of Lady You, the principal wife of the Ning Mansion. After Lady You's father died, her stepmother, Old Lady You, remarried and raised her two daughters under impoverished circumstances. Because the family had little means of support, they had long depended upon the Ning Mansion for their livelihood.
After Jia Jing died, the entire Ning Mansion was occupied with funeral arrangements. Because the family had little means of support, they had long depended upon the Ning Mansion for their livelihood.
After Jia Jing died, the entire Ning Mansion was occupied with funeral arrangements. Jia Zhen, Jia Rong, and other family members frequently had to leave the mansion to observe the mourning rites, leaving the household temporarily short of people to manage its affairs. Lady You therefore invited her stepmother, Old Lady You, together with her two younger stepsisters, to move into the mansion and help.
It was from that moment that the two You sisters were truly drawn into the vast and dark whirlpool that was the Jia family.
Baoyu was still very young at the time. All he noticed was that the two You sisters were extraordinarily beautiful.
You Erjie in particular possessed a quiet gentleness. She spoke softly and gracefully, completely unlike Wang Xifeng, whose beauty was dazzling and whose manner was sharp and commanding. She was neither as calculating as Wang Xifeng nor as fiery and fearless as Yousanjie. She usually lowered her head with a gentle smile, looking so delicate that even a passing breeze seemed capable of knocking her over.
When Baoyu first met her, he felt she scarcely seemed like someone who belonged to the ordinary world.
Only later did he come to understand that women like her often died the fastest in a place like the Jia Mansion. After the You sisters moved into the Ning Mansion, Jia Zhen and his son Jia Rong soon began to harbor improper desires toward them.
When Jiao Da was drunk, he once shouted a sentence so shocking that it chilled everyone who heard it:
"The father climbs into the ashes, and the son sleeps with his younger uncle's wife."
At the time, Baoyu did not fully understand what those words meant. Only later did he gradually realize how many unspeakably filthy secrets lay hidden beneath the glittering wealth and splendor of the Ning Mansion.
You Erjie had a gentle nature and was also attracted by wealth and comfort. Although she knew perfectly well that Jia Zhen and Jia Rong were not honorable men, she neither openly resisted nor fully accepted them. Little by little, she allowed herself to become entangled in their world.
The person who would ultimately push her onto the road of death, however, was Jia Lian.
Jia Lian had always been a notorious womanizer. The moment he met You Erjie in the Ning Mansion, he was captivated by her beauty. Jia Rong eagerly encouraged the affair, secretly purchasing a house for Jia Lian in Huazhi Lane, where You Erjie was hidden away as his mistress.
During that period, You Erjie truly believed that she had finally found the man destined for her.
She found Jia Lian attentive, charming, and affectionate—far kinder than the fierce and intimidating Wang Xifeng, whom everyone feared. She even dreamed that one day she might enter the Jia Mansion openly and honorably, living peacefully as Jia Lian's second wife.
Whenever Baoyu later thought back on this episode, he always felt that You Erjie's greatest tragedy was not that she had given herself to a man. It was that she genuinely believed a place like the Jia Mansion could ever offer lasting love.
She did not understand Wang Xifeng at all.
But Wang Xifeng understood her completely.
After discovering that her husband had secretly taken You Erjie as another wife, Wang Xifeng showed not the slightest trace of anger. On the contrary, she personally rode in her carriage to bring You Erjie into the Rong Mansion.
The gesture moved You Erjie so deeply that she was almost brought to tears.
She even said to her mother, Old Lady You,
"Everyone says the Second Mistress is formidable. But now that I've met her myself, she seems more like a living Bodhisattva."
Only much later did Baoyu come to understand something important.
The truly dangerous people are never the ones who explode in anger at once.
The truly dangerous people are those who welcome you with a smile… and then slowly destroy you.
After You Erjie entered the Rong Mansion, her nightmare began.
Wang Xifeng never dirtied her own hands.
Instead, she deliberately allowed the maid Qiutong to humiliate You Erjie day after day.
Qiutong had been intentionally placed beside Jia Lian by Wang Xifeng herself. Young, sharp-tongued, and aggressive, she constantly mocked You Erjie, calling her "a woman first seduced and only afterward married," "a fox spirit," and "damaged goods."
Seeing Wang Xifeng's ambiguous attitude, the servants quickly learned which way the wind was blowing.
The servants who brought her meals treated her carelessly;
the old women mocked her;
the maids ignored and isolated her.
Little by little, a woman who had once lived with hope found herself completely surrounded and trapped by the entire Jia household.
The cruelest blow, however, was her child.
You Erjie had become pregnant. That unborn child was her final hope.
But Wang Xifeng secretly bribed the incompetent physician Hu Junrong, who deliberately prescribed the wrong medicine, causing You Erjie to lose the baby.
After the child was gone, You Erjie collapsed completely.
Only then did she finally understand that she had not entered the gate of wealth and honor.
She had entered the gate of death.
After learning what had happened, Baoyu felt deeply distressed.
He had always cherished girls, and seeing someone as gentle and fragile as You Erjie reduced to a pale, emaciated woman who spent her days in tears filled him with sorrow. Yet he was still young at the time. How could he possibly confront Wang Xifeng directly?
What was worse, even Jia Lian himself was unable to protect her.
For the first time, Baoyu truly realized that within such a powerful family, there were times when a person could not even manage to be a decent human being.
One day, You Erjie finally reached the end of her endurance.Quietly, she swallowed pieces of gold.
By the time she was discovered, she was already beyond saving.
It was said that before she died, tears streamed down her face as she whispered,
"Only now do I know what it means to regret..."
But by then, everything was already too late.
Whenever Baoyu later thought of You Erjie, an indescribable chill would rise within him.
He suddenly realized that women in this world do not always die by swords or knives.
Some are driven to death by rigid rules;
some by the weight of reputation;
some by jealousy;
and still others are worn down, little by little, by people whose faces are always covered with smiles.
That was how You Erjie died.
