(未完待續)If Qingwen's death was the result of being driven, step by step, into a corner, then Siqi's death was something different altogether—a desperate act of defiance by someone who knew she could never win, yet refused to bow her head.
In Jia Baoyu's eyes, Siqi was unlike the other maids. She was neither as gentle as Xiren nor as tactful as Ping'er. She had a fiery temper, spoke bluntly, and quarreled whenever she thought someone was in the wrong. During the famous disturbance in the kitchen, she nearly turned the entire Grand View Garden upside down.
Other maids feared offending people. Siqi did not. Others endured hunger in silence. She dared to slam the table and demand justice. Many people disliked her because of it, but Baoyu never did. He knew that although Siqi had a fierce temper, she was utterly genuine.
Unlike so many others, she never smiled politely while hiding calculations in her heart. Whatever she felt, she acted upon. When she loved, she loved sincerely. When she hated, she hated just as sincerely. But people like that seldom survived for long in the Jia household.
Long before the tragedy, Siqi had already fallen in love. The young man was named Pan You'an, her cousin. They had known each other since childhood, grown up together, and gradually their friendship had become love. Today, such affection between two young people would seem perfectly ordinary. Long before the tragedy, Siqi had already fallen in love. The young man was named Pan You'an, her cousin. They had known each other since childhood, grown up together, and gradually their friendship had become love. Today, such affection between two young people would seem perfectly ordinary. But within the Jia Mansion, where rules governed every aspect of life, a maid who dared to pursue a secret romance committed an unforgivable offense. Worse still, Siqi was the chief maid attending Yingchun.
Every move she made was watched. Yet Siqi refused to accept her fate. She would not live like the other maids, waiting for a single word from their masters before being casually assigned to some servant and expected to spend the rest of their lives in quiet resignation.
She insisted on choosing for herself. And it was precisely because of that choice that she stepped onto the road leading to her death. When the Grand View Garden was searched, her secret was finally exposed.
That night, the entire Grand View Garden was filled with fear. Elderly serving women carried lanterns through the courtyards, opening chests and searching every room. Madam Wang Shanbao led the search party like a pack of hunting wolves. At that very moment, Siqi was secretly meeting Pan You'an.
They had only wanted to see each other for a little while and exchange a few words. But fate had other plans. The search descended upon them without warning. Pan You'an fled by climbing over the wall, while Siqi was caught on the spot. At that moment, she already knew her life as she had known it was over.
After the scandal broke, the entire Jia household branded Siqi as a shameless woman. Those who had once laughed and chatted with her now kept their distance as though she carried a plague. Yingchun was too weak to protect her. Baoyu pitied her deeply, yet he, too, was powerless to save her.
Siqi was driven out of the Grand View Garden. Looking back on that night, Baoyu often felt that it was not only Siqi who had been expelled. The last fragile hope he still held for this world had been driven out together with her.
After returning home, Siqi's life became even more miserable. Her mother believed that her daughter had brought unbearable disgrace upon the family. Every day she scolded her for being shameless, while hastily trying to marry her off to someone else in the hope of burying the scandal as quickly as possible. But Siqi refused no matter what. She had given her heart to Pan You'an and was willing to turn against her own family rather than abandon him.
When Baoyu later heard what had happened, his heart grew unbearably heavy. For he suddenly realized that, in some ways, Siqi was very much like himself. She refused to accept rules that she believed were false and unjust. Neither did he.
He could not understand why something that everyone secretly did should suddenly become an unforgivable crime the moment it was brought into the open. Neither could Siqi.
But he was the young master of the Jia family.
Siqi was only a maid.
And so, in the end, she alone had to bear the consequences.
At last, Pan You'an returned. When he learned that Siqi had been expelled, he was nearly driven mad with anxiety. After searching everywhere, he finally found her. His plan was simple—to take Siqi away and leave forever, escaping this place that devoured human lives. But Siqi's mother fought desperately to stop them.
She would rather force her own daughter to die than allow her to "bring shame upon the family."
The house erupted into complete chaos. Standing in the middle of it all, Siqi suddenly understood everything. She knew there was no road left for her to walk.
She was forbidden to marry the man she loved;
She was forbidden to live the life she wanted;
In this world, everyone spoke endlessly of propriety and rules.Yet not a single person had ever asked whether she herself was willing.
Then, suddenly, she smiled.
It was said that her laughter was unbearably tragic.
The next instant, she hurled herself headfirst into the wall. Blood instantly spread across the floor. By the time everyone realized what had happened, Siqi was already beyond saving.
Pan You'an watched her die before his eyes, and his mind completely shattered. He held Siqi in his arms and wept for a long time. Then, drawing a knife, he slashed it across his own throat. Thus the two young lovers died together.
When Baoyu later heard the news, he sat in silence for a very long time. He suddenly remembered the days when Siqi would slam her hand on the kitchen table and scold people without the slightest fear. Back then, everyone complained that she was fierce and difficult. Yet now that she was gone, no one remembered that all she had ever wanted was the chance to live an honest life.
For the first time, Baoyu felt genuine fear.
He suddenly understood that, in this world, a girl could not survive merely by being gentle. Yet if she was too earnest, too steadfast, or too courageous in love, she could not survive either.
Siqi was driven to her death simply because she dared to love.
