(未完待續)Looking back years later, Jia Baoyu finally understood that among all the girls of the Grand View Garden, there was only one whose death truly destroyed his heart—Lin Daiyu. The deaths of the others filled him with sorrow. But Daiyu's death was like a knife that carved his heart away and carried off his very soul.
The first time Baoyu met Lin Daiyu, he was still only a child. That day, Grandmother Jia asked someone to escort her granddaughter into the room. Everyone saw a frail little girl standing quietly before them. She carried an air of cool elegance; her delicate features were as misty as distant mountains, as though she had arrived wrapped in the gentle moisture and quiet spirit of Jiangnan itself. The moment Baoyu looked up and saw her, something within him trembled. Without thinking, he blurted out,
"I've met this cousin before."
The whole room burst into laughter, believing he was talking nonsense again. Only Baoyu himself knew he was neither speaking carelessly nor making a joke. He truly felt that he had known her long before that day. Years later, he often wondered whether some people were simply debts left over from a previous life—so that the moment they met again in this one, they could never be separated.
Lin Daiyu was unlike any of the other girls. She was not as dignified and composed as Baochai, nor as openhearted and carefree as Xiangyun, nor as gentle and considerate as Xiren. She was sensitive, fragile, and quick to tears. Yet at the same time, her words could be astonishingly sharp, leaving others speechless with a single remark. Many people found her difficult to get along with. Yet Baoyu understood her better than anyone else.
For only Baoyu knew that beneath Daiyu's sharp tongue lay something else entirely—fear.

She simply had no sense of security.
Her mother had died when she was young, and later her father passed away as well. Alone in the world, she came to live in the Jia household as a dependent. Grandmother Jia loved her dearly, yet Daiyu always knew that she was never truly one of the Jia family. Unlike Baochai, she had a mother and an elder brother. Unlike Xiangyun, she had uncles and aunts. Even Yingchun and Tanchun possessed an unquestioned place within the family. Daiyu had none of these. The only person she truly possessed was Baoyu.
That was why she cared so deeply about him.
If Baoyu spent too much time talking with another maid, she would become unhappy. If he showed Baochai even the slightest extra attention, she would be heartbroken. If he neglected her for a single day, she could spend the entire night weeping alone. Many people laughed at her, calling her narrow-minded and jealous. But only later did Baoyu realize that a woman who had entrusted her entire life to a single person could hardly help fearing that she might lose him.
And unfortunately, Baoyu himself was the very person who caused her the greatest insecurity.
Baoyu truly loved Daiyu. Of that, there was no doubt. Nowhere in Dream of the Red Chamber was there a love more genuine than his. Together they read The Story of the Western Wing. Peach blossoms were in full bloom. Baoyu secretly carried a copy of The Romance of the Western Chamber into the garden, and beneath the flowering trees they read it together, line by line. When they came to the verse,
"You are one burdened with sorrow and illness; I am the beauty who could overthrow kingdoms,"
Daiyu blushed deeply and turned away. Yet after taking only a few steps, she could not resist looking back. At that moment, both of them already understood what neither dared to say aloud.
Later, Daiyu's burial of the fallen flowers became one of the most heartbreaking scenes in the entire novel.
She held a flower hoe in her hands and buried the fallen blossoms, petal by petal, into the earth. As she buried them, she softly recited: "Flowers fade, flowers fly, filling the sky; when red fades and fragrance dies, who will pity them?" Others thought she was merely grieving over spring. Only Baoyu knew that what she was truly mourning was herself. She knew that she, too, was like those flowers: however beautifully she might bloom, in the end she would still be broken by wind and rain.
When Baoyu was beaten, Daiyu wept more bitterly than anyone else. Jia Zheng struck him with the board as though he meant to beat him to death, terrifying the entire Jia household. Baoyu was beaten until his flesh was torn and he lost consciousness. That night, Daiyu hid in her room and cried until her eyes were swollen. Later, when she went to see Baoyu and saw his body covered with wounds, her heart ached so badly that she could not say a word. All she could do was weep. Baoyu, however, comforted her instead, saying only three soft words: "Don't worry."
Those three words stayed with Daiyu for the rest of her life. Because she had always believed that Baoyu truly would remain by her side.
But later she came to understand that in a place like the Jia household, sincerity was the most useless thing of all.
Grandmother Jia grew older and older. Lady Wang began to hold real authority, and the influence of Aunt Xue and the Wang family grew stronger by the day. Throughout the Jia household, from top to bottom, everyone was speaking of the "gold and jade match." Baochai had her golden lock, Baoyu had his Magic Jade, and everyone said this was a marriage made by Heaven. Only Baoyu and Daiyu still clung to the old "wood and stone pledge."
But in the end, the pledge of wood and stone could not defeat the doctrine of gold and jade.
It was not that Baoyu did not want to resist. He smashed his jade, lost his temper, refused to eat, and tried desperately to tell everyone that he wanted no so-called gold and jade match. But he was too weak. He could not leave the Jia household, could not leave Grandmother Jia, and did not truly possess the strength to oppose the entire family. He remained, in the end, like a child. Daiyu, however, had already been forced by reality to become an adult.
And so she grew thinner and thinner, and her illness became worse and worse.
In truth, she had long known that she would not live much longer. Yet deep in her heart, she still held on to one last hope. She believed that Baoyu understood her. She believed that Baoyu would not betray her. That was why, when the "bride-switching scheme" finally began, she collapsed completely.
During those days, the Grand View Garden was hung everywhere with lanterns and decorations. Everyone was busy preparing for the wedding. Only the Xiaoxiang Pavilion felt as cold as a tomb. Daiyu was already so ill that she could no longer rise from bed. She lay there, listening to the faint sound of music and drums drifting in from outside. In her heart, she already understood everything. She simply refused to believe that Baoyu would truly marry someone else.
At last, she finally learned that the wedding was real.
It is said that on that night, she asked Zijuan to bring out all the poems she had written over the years. Page by page, poem by poem, she burned them all. The flames shone upon her pale face and reflected the tears in her eyes. Zijuan cried and tried to snatch them away, but Daiyu would not allow it. She knew that those things no longer had any use. The poems she and Baoyu had once read together, the dreams they had once spoken of together, the years they had once shared together—now all of them had to be burned.
The fire burned brighter and brighter, while Daiyu's life, like that fading flame, slowly dimmed away.
Some people say that with her final breath, she still called out,
"Baoyu... Baoyu... you..."
But the words that were to follow never left her lips.
Perhaps she meant to say, "You are so heartless."
Perhaps she meant, "You are so foolish."
Or perhaps she wished to blame him for nothing at all. Deep in her heart, she had always known that it was not because Baoyu did not love her. It was simply because he did not possess the strength to protect her.
But for Lin Daiyu, that alone was enough.
She had lived her entire life with pride. Rather than bow her head, she chose death.
And so, in the end, she was gone.
Some say she died of illness. Others say she wept until her tears were exhausted and her life ended. Still others believe that, in truth, she simply no longer wished to live. But later Baoyu came to feel that none of those explanations truly mattered. For the moment Daiyu really died was the moment she finally understood that this world could not make room for genuine love.
When Baoyu finally learned of Daiyu's death, he completely lost himself. He rushed to her coffin and wept like a child. But by then, everything was already too late. The person who had read The Story of the Western Wing with him was gone. The one who had buried fallen flowers beside him was gone. The one who had understood him better than anyone else was gone forever.
From that day onward, half of Jia Baoyu died as well, though no one else could see it.
